Our 1st MV75 award - The Mike Hetherton Trophy is an annual award that was introduced for the 2024/2025 season.
Mike has been a stalwart member of Pickering Running Club for many years. Throughout his life he has earned the reputation of being a true adventurer. His achievements across the many fields of endeavour are legendary. Apart from being a tenacious and fast runner he has also climbed mountains (including the Eiger), sailed across oceans and skied outrageously fast. Until very recently he was an ever-present competitor in the Kandahar Ski race, always impeccably dressed in a shirt and tie.
Mike has also encountered adversity, several years ago he underwent major surgery to fuse several vertebrae in his spine, he was advised to take it easy and not run for several months but was back parkrunning within a few weeks and winning race series soon after.
Sadly Mike suffered a major head trauma following a cycle crash in 2024. After surgery he was determined to keep active despite his injuries which resulted in accelerating the onset of dementia. He still trains with PRC although he realises that he can no longer compete at the sport he loves.
Mike enjoyed running in the East Yorkshire Cross Country League and was keen to sponsor this award for the Vet 75 category.
