Planning for 2027-2028 and beyond
East Yorkshire Cross Country League Representatives complete Huggate Route Recce
Today, 14 representatives from the clubs participating in the East Yorkshire Cross Country League, together with the Clerk from the Huggate Parish Council, completed a full recce walk of a proposed new cross country route in and around the beautiful village of Huggate.
The group assessed all aspects required to support a future event, including the 7.3-mile course itself, church/village hall facilities, parking arrangements, marshal locations, first aid and toilet provision. The visit follows a very positive and productive meeting held with Huggate Parish Council earlier this year in March.
The proposed route offers runners a scenic yet demanding challenge through the stunning East Yorkshire countryside, covering 7.3 miles with an impressive 833 feet of elevation gain. Representatives described the course as both beautiful and testing, with a variety of terrain and outstanding panoramic views.
Adding to the day was the enthusiasm of Jenson, aged 8, from East Hull Harriers, who joined the recce walk and quickly became the star of the hills. Racing up the climbs with boundless energy, Jenson appeared to love every minute of the challenging course and showed all the signs of being a future East Yorkshire Cross Country League runner.
League representatives are enthusiastic about continuing to work collaboratively with local landowners, parish councils, and rural communities across the region to identify and develop potential new race routes. Any future proposals would then be progressed through the appropriate approval process involving the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Highways Event Team, Humberside Police, and the ERYC Countryside and Footpaths Team.
The League would like to thank Huggate Parish Council and all those involved in today’s recce for their support, hospitality, and willingness to engage positively with the local running community.
With strong cooperation between clubs, councils, landowners, and local residents, the League hopes this could become another memorable and challenging addition to the East Yorkshire cross country calendar.
